For his nearly 20 years of service to organized labor, the Northwest Indiana Federation of Labor (NIFL) recently honored a veteran Teamster organizer and business agent.
Harvey Jackson, the Steward Council President of Teamsters Local 142, received the NIFL’s Service to Labor Award in a ceremony last month. In addition to his enduring commitment to the men and women of Local 142, Jackson was honored for his ongoing assistance of affiliated Teamster charities and the organization of multiple community outreach programs.
The longtime member, who first joined the union as a steelworker with Gary Transfer Company Inc., was humbled by the accolade.
“I was taken aback when I first heard I’d be receiving this award. I just do the things I do,” Jackson said. “I’m just a kid from Hammond, Indiana who grew up in the projects. If someone had told me 20 years ago that I’d be working with the Teamsters and accomplishing everything I’ve been able to, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
Jackson’s journey to build a better life began at an early age. Raised by a single mother who passed away when Jackson was just 19, the Teamster had no choice but to grow up fast and sought out a good-paying union job to help with the bills. Decades later, the union is still going strong and Jackson has risen within its ranks. From overseeing charitable donations to organizing Local 142’s family friendly movie nights and annual golf outing, the Teamster’s allegiance to labor doesn’t end at the union hall.
“True Teamster power is rooted in public service and a commitment to working men and women everywhere—a spirit Harvey Jackson proudly embodies,” said John T. Coli, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25.
Teamsters Local 142 is an affiliate of Teamsters Joint Council 25, which represents more than 100,000 hardworking men and women throughout Illinois and Indiana.
